Magnetic Particle Testing is one of the most important NDT techniques in industries due to its ease to perform & effective for surface and sub-surface defects. MPI uses strong magnetic force to magnetise the component. Once the part is magnetised iron filling or magnetic ink is spread on the surface. Any flaw, discontinuity or crack producing leakage of magnetic flux will attract the iron filling and forms the cluster. The presence of cluster indicates presence of discontinuity.

What is MPI Bench?
MPI bench is a bench set with current transformer to produce very high amperage low voltage current to magnetise the test object. The MPI bench has a fixed head and one movable head to hold the component through which current is passed, this magnetising equipment is named as head shot, which produces direct circular magnetic field to reveal longitudinal and radial discontinuities.
The coil shot is provided to produce longitudinal magnetic field for detection of defects oriented in circumferentially (transverse). The MPI bench can produce multidirectional magnetic field to test the part for detecting discontinuities in all orientation in one shot only. MPI benches use wet particles which improve sensitivity of the test. Convertible dark room (Rexine covering the whole unit) allows to perform fluorescent MPI with Black (UV-A) light.
